Dimarco gives Inter injury update and describes ‘top 3’ goal

Federico Dimarco describes his fantastic free kick goal in Inter’s 1-1 draw with Napoli and reacts to some remarkable statistics about that strike, along with an injury update.

The Italy international had put his team in front in this evening’s Scudetto showdown, curling the free kick into the far top corner with Alex Meret left rooted to the spot.

“I had hoped to celebrate the goal with a victory, but this will do,” Dimarco told DAZN.

It was put to him that this was a statistical anomaly for a couple of reasons, as the last direct free kick scored by Inter in Serie A was against Bologna back in November 2022 and that too was from Dimarco.

Dimarco goal makes history

However, it was also the first left-footed free kick scored in this stadium since it was renamed after Napoli legend Diego Armando Maradona, perhaps the greatest left foot the sport has ever seen.

“I am pleased to hear it’s the first at the Stadio Maradona, but let’s not even attempt comparisons! We are talking about one of the best of all time, someone who wrote the history of football,” replied Dimarco.

“I do think it was in my top three career goals, though. My favourite remains the very first for Inter, in Genoa against Sampdoria, as that was the most exciting.”

The player was unable to complete the match at the Stadio Maradona, as he limped off with a muscular issue soon after the restart.

“I had already felt something in the flexor during the first half, I tried to get back out there for the second, but I was struggling to run properly. It hurt and we thought it wise not to risk making it any worse.”

Carlos Augusto, Nicola Zalewski and Matteo Darmian were already injured, so Denzel Dumfries had to move over to the left flank to cover the gap when Dimarco went off.

“The team deserves praise, because we are up there challenging for the title despite missing so many players.”
