Atalanta have secured Coppa Campioni qualification and are now trying to convince coach Gian Piero Gasperini to sign a new contract after nine years at the club.

La Diva are in Genoa this evening for their penultimate Serie A match of the season, but have already guaranteed a top four finish thanks to their victory over Roma.

That means they can already begin work on planning for next term and there are many issues still up in the air, starting with the coach.

Gasperini took over in Bergamo in the summer of 2016 with the club doing its usual routine of bouncing between Serie A and B.

He has taken them to win the Europa League, reach the Coppa Italia Final, and be regulars participating in the Coppa Campioni.

His current contract runs to June 2026 and Gasperini has suggested he will not sign an extension.

Atalanta are eager to keep him in charge, but the coach wants guarantees for a long-term project, so a new deal to June 2027 would not be sufficient to convince him.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, the key could be offering the 67-year-old a longer contract that runs to June 2028, along with promises of investment to keep raising the bar.

They were for a while in the Scudetto race with Inter and Napoli, so with more strength in depth, they could challenge for even bigger targets than the top four.

Several clubs are showing an interest in Gasperini to offer a new project, above all Roma, where Claudio Ranieri is heading for retirement.
